Velcro trainers typically consist of two fabric strips which are fastened to the opposing fabric surface. When the surfaces are pulled apart, they make a distinctive ripping sound. Velcro Fastening was conceived in 1941 by George de Mestral, a Swiss Engineer. The thought of a quick and easy fastener was conceived when he and his dog went on a Hunting trip. On his return from Hunting he examined burrs of burdock that had continued to stick to his philadelphia phillies shirt and his dog’s fur. When he examined the burdock under a microscope, he noticed hundreds of ‘hooks’ that caught on to anything with a loop. It was at that moment the idea of binding two fabrics reversibly was made. George de Mestral named his invention ‘Velcro’, a combination of two French words Velours (Velvet) and Crochet (Hook). A generic terminology for Velcro fasteners include ‘touch fasteners’, ‘hook and loop’, and ‘burr’. Velcro was seen as a safe and maintenance free replacement for many things, because of its easy application and convenience.
