There are several different angles you can shoot from when shooting portraits. Seeing and knowing these angles will help to improve the quality of your images. Here are a couple of creative angles that many photographers forget about:
Bird’s-eye:
You shoot from above your subject.
Tips:
Have the subject lay on their back and put their hands behind their head. Stand over them and shoot from directly above their face. Tilt the camera so that the subject’s right elbow is in the top left corner, and their left elbow is in the bottom right corner. This combination of angle and tilt makes for a sweet and creative picture.
Have the subject sit on the floor with their legs out to the side and bent behind them. Use a latter to find the best view from above them. Ideally, the subject will have their head only slightly bent when looking at the camera. This is not a view from directly above.
Worm’s-eye:
This time, you get down on the floor! If your subject is standing, your best position may be on your knees looking up at them. If your subject is sitting, your best position may be laying on the floor looking up at them.
Tips:
It is good to keep in mind that shots from below often make subjects look larger and more powerful. This is a great angle for sports players. It is fun, creative, and has a good effect. For instance: a basketball player sitting in a chair leaning forward with his ball, a good angle might be from just in front of this front right ankle. Get the shoes in there if possible!
With babies and children, the worm’s eye view brings the world down to their size. It is great for a fun and casual looking photo and utilizing these two techniques will ensure a increase of your photos.
