Gaitscan Explained

Gaitscan Explainedblack t shirt

We tend to take our feet for granted. They form the foundation of our body, and most of us spend hours on them every day. Whether standing, walking, running, sitting, jumping, climbing or landing a triple somersault (perhaps the latter is not so common, but still, you never know!), most of the day is spent with our feet supporting us in some way, and most of the time, we don’t give a second thought to improving them with technology such as Gaitscan and custom orthotics for shoes.

The world at your feet

I’m here to tell you that your feet are well worth a second thought, and that you shouldn’t take them for granted. After all, our bodies are made up of complex mechanics of interconnected joints, bones, muscles, ligaments and more — and our feet are responsible for holding up the entire show. If there is a problem with your feet, then this could easily lead to problems with your knees, hips, pelvis, spine or neck.

Most people are surprised to learn that their back problems or knee problems may be a result of an imbalance in their feet — but when you really think about it, it makes sense. Try this: stand up straight and roll both of your feet inwards so the insides of your feet are supporting your weight. Can you feel the strain moving up your leg? Now imagine walking like this all day — that would throw your whole body out pretty quickly, right?

While most people suffer only slight imbalances in their feet, even a slight imbalance is bound to take its toll after years and years of constant thudding and pounding on the range of surfaces we encounter in our daily lives. Whether you’re suffering from pain or not, you should go ahead and have a Gaitscan to ensure your feet are functioning correctly. The rest of your body will thank you for it.

So what is Gaitscan?

Your ‘gait’ is basically your individual style of walking. Your heel strikes the ground first, followed by the rest of your foot which absorbs more of the weight. You then bring your other foot forward and repeat the same process in a continuous cycle. Sounds pretty straightforward, right? But your foot is made up of three different arches which must all be functioning correctly to ensure weight is distributed evenly. Each of us have slight variations in the way we distribute our weight, which means each of us have slight variations in our gait.

Gaitscan technology works to analyse your gait to see how your walking style can be improved. It starts by scanning your foot by walking across a plate with thousands of tiny sensors.Your foot pressure is then mapped out and displayed on a screen. The data is then sent to the Gaitscan lab where it is analysed. If it is deemed necessary, custom orthotics can then be designed to suit your feet. These foot orthotics or ‘shoe inserts’ help support your arches in a way that regular navy veteran t shirt cannot.

What are some of the problems that might arise without proper arch support?

  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Achilles tendinitis
  • Morton’s neuroma
  • ACL tears
  • Hip and lower back pain
  • Arthritis
